Turkish Society: Treasurer

Hi everyone, my name is Togay Ata Gokalp and I would like to be your next treasurer.

Since starting university, I have begun to see how much my culture and language means to me. Whether it be the food, humour or camaraderie between all the Turkish people at UCL. I believe that the Turkish Society is a hub that allows us to connect at university. Such a hub needs fund management to finance events and run the society, which is what I wish to achieve. My interest in my course, Economics, gives me insights into work needed for the position, with modules such as accounting, aiding the organising of the society’s finances.

Moreover, I have helpful experiences for this role, such as:

• Head Organiser of an Islandwide event for EYP Cyprus where certain funds were given to do purchases for the event
• Running the sale of tickets for my high school graduation and using the funds to pay for purchases
• Achieving favourable prices with suppliers on the production of leavers hoodies
• Working with a small business’ finance department, to gain a better understanding of spreadsheet use and distribution of money

Lastly, the treasurer should be a team player. My experiences of leading teams in events have shown me how to deal with different scenarios within team dynamics.

I aim to aid the Turkish society into becoming better, whilst building up foundations set by previous committees. I hope that you feel the same way and believe that I would be a good fit for the role.

I am a first year Economics student, running for the Treasurer of the Turkish Society. Coming here and meeting with so many Turkish people at UCL, I feel that the Turkish Society isn’t active as it should be. The Turkish culture is worth sharing; thus, this is a society with so much potential yet so little presence!

I have been actively involved in my high school’s (Uskudar American Academy) student union. Having served as the student body secretary, I am very experienced about the internal and external dynamics of a society. Now, as an economics undergraduate, I believe my relevant numerical abilities, past experiences and social skills make me a good fit for this role. Hoping to become a part of it, I’m sure we will create memorable events as a team.
