Health is affected by all aspects of life, not just our biology. I believe all students, no matter their aspirations, will benefit from an appreciation of Global Health. As a medical student, my year intercalating in Global Health has been the most valuable so far. I entered knowing little about the field and now have a newfound passion that I would love to share using this platform!

What are my goals?

  • Continue providing thought-provoking events that allow students to engage with global health work
  • Create a discussion club, where students can meet and debate global health issues
  • Provide fun socials for students to meet
  • Create events for UCL Global Health students, encouraging them to get more involved with SfGH
  • Provide a safe and inclusive support network for students, with welfare events and reliable social media communications
  • Create support hubs for students affected by ongoing issues in global health

Why me?

  • I'm currently on the RUMS Events committee and have experience in liasing with venues/organisations to plan and promote events. This has allowed me to develop organisation, communication, creative and social skills that will be crucial to this new role
  • I previously held the role of events lead in my sixth form and successfully organised academic, non-academic and welfare events
  • I'm nearing the end of my Global Health iBSc and would love to stay involved with this field and share my passion with other students
Rhiann Jiao

Hi everyone! My name is Rhiann and I am a third-year medical student currently intercalating in Women’s Health.

As our lives gradually transition to a new normal, it is now more important than ever to take this chance to connect with each other and the wider community. To me, the role of Welfare & Social Officer is not only about being the point of contact for discussion and support, but also about cultivating an environment and creating opportunities that encourage the members of our society to learn and grow. Next year, in addition to hosting student socials to meet regularly, I hope to build onto the current mentorship scheme and organise more events with experts and enthusiasts in the global health discipline to help enhance your network and portfolio.

This year, I was part of the subcommittee for the Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) campaign, which tackled inequalities in pharmaceutical access. Through this, I believe I have developed the vital skills of organisation, diligence and effective communication to make the above goals happen. Moreover, I have discovered from being a UCL campus ambassador that I truly enjoy working with people from all sorts of backgrounds and will use this to ensure everyone’s voices are heard.

By learning first-hand the multifaceted perspectives to global health issues with SfGH, my curiosity has been fuelled further. I look forward to sharing this same passion I experienced with everyone! Thank you :)

Raphael Ardani

I have had the honour of being the campaign lead for the war-torn committee this year. This position has helped me to consolidate my passion and commitment for global health activism and campaigning that is able to spread within and beyond the university. I feel that global health has for too long been viewed through the pane of western meritocracy, which is why I am so enthused that Students for Global Health is a network that seeks to enact meaningful changes within the field of global health through holistic and internationally co-operative student-led campaigning. As social and welfare sec I would like to further improve our links with student global health groups in other countries, on top of our existing penpal scheme with students at NTHU in Taiwan. I also believe that I would be suited to this role very well. I am a calm and patient individual - traits that I feel have been consolidated through my time spent as a hospital ward volunteer - and I think that I am a problem-solver as well as someone who always tries to resolve conflict wherever it may arise. I will work hard to ensure that UCL Students for Global Health remains a place where we can all voice our opinions in a friendly and compassionate environment that always remains committed to the cause of improved global health for all.
