Douglas Thorkell

My name is Douglas, and I am a second-year Politics and International Relations student. As the current Treasurer for the Nordic Society, I have implemented several improvements to our organisation, not least by enabling an increased presence on the UCL campus but also by organising joint events with our fellow London universities such as the Mamma Mia party and our most recent Boat party. As your President, I would not only continue this tradition but expand on the current committee’s excellent work, effectively leading to more collaborations and opportunities to celebrate Nordic culture. However, as I have come to learn, knowledge rarely defines an expert and I am certain that my experiences with the Student Union and society administration during the past year will serve us well in the new academic year.

Through my Swedish identity, I have come to recognise an understanding of diversity as an essential strategy in fostering community cohesion, particularly so to the Nordic Society, catering to Nordic and non-Nordic students alike. Personally, I am a frequent visitor of ScandiKitchen in Fitzrovia, either to prepare for one of our holidays or just to grab an occasional ‘fika’. In other words, I am a sucker for Nordic traditions, and I cannot wait for what the next academic year has to offer.
