Ben Schmitz-Gielsdorf

Hey guys, my name is Ben,

I was this year's kit's officer and third team co-coach/co-captain and would love to take on the role of president next year. During the first year of UCL Basketball being fully back I have become a fan of the camaraderie and community that the club cherishes. This is something I will aim keep up and improve on even more. I would love for Basketball games to be an event that UCL student's know about and enjoy to attend even if they don't play themselves. This will be achieved through excellent promotion of our games, but also the organization of charity games and collaborations with other clubs. Other than that, I am planning to provide opportunities for all the teams to bond and socialize beyond the weekly sports night (which is also really important!) by arranging club dinners, nights out and weekend trips. This will also give 1st year students the opportunity to become part of the community very quickly.

The past year I have got to know some amazing people that love the game of Basketball. I want this community to grow and provide them with as many chances as possible to engage with the sport, together with people who share just the same appreciation for it.

Prem Sodhi

Basketball has a very special place in my heart. For many of us in this club, it helps take our minds off hectic study schedules and release stress in the form of passion and competitiveness on the court.

It is vital that the good work put in by this year’s committee carries on into next year as the club continues to develop and expand. As this year’s welfare officer, I have built good relations with many club members and have further developed important qualities such as leadership and communication skills which the president will need in abundance. As a medical student, I am also very organised and accustomed to interacting with new people in a calm, measured and rationale manner which would translate to into how I would run this club. Moreover, my role on the core committee this year has allowed me to work closely with the current president, greatly aiding a transition into this role.

My commitment to this club was highlighted during the Movember campaign whereby I raised £308 of the club’s £441 total. I also helped set up the 3v3 intermural league which encouraged wider basketball participation at UCL. Moving forward I am determined to see this club reach new heights both on and off the court and align itself with the best that UCL has to offer. I would want to do this by increasing the capacity of the social sessions, organising more club wide socials e.g. NBA Sunday game screenings and release new merch to make sure we’re iced out on and off the court!
