Election post
Hi! I’m Haruna, a 2nd year Psychology student and I’m running to be an outreach officer. I’m standing for this role because I want to help reduce inequalities all over the world.
All throughout high school, I was involved in service groups that helped the homeless and orphans in the local area. This opened my eyes to the immense privilege I have, and it fueled my desire to give back to the less fortunate communities. However, I recognize that this is not enough. I must not only foster my own passion for changing the world, but I must also share and inspire that passion with other like-minded youths to make a long-term, sustainable difference.
Through my past experiences, I believe I have developed the necessary skill set for this role:
- Organization, communication, and leadership skills - Hosted a 24hr running marathon which involved 44 participants and raised over £1500 for charities
- Understanding how volunteering works, the difficulties they face, and how to overcome it - Social hackathon with Green Shoots Foundation, St John’s Hospice, and Democracy Volunteers
- Working towards human rights - Team leader of AIESEC, an organization that provides volunteering projects that tackles the UN's SDGs and encouraged Sixth Form students to take part
- Working with school children - Tutoring, summer school assistant, and volunteering with orphans
