The Sports Officer role is important as Sports can bring communities together. Whether it is in a casual, social sense or playing competitive games, sport can be an exciting and fun way to bring the African and Caribbean society together, no matter the experience of playing football, basketball, or netball.
To spearhead this movement as Sports Officer would be a great experience for me, and it allows me to use some of the skills and knowledge I gained from previous roles in my sixth form (and watching Arsenal games week in week out for 18 years) on a wider scale. As a House Captain in my sixth form, much of the tasks I had to carry out parallel the roles of the Sports Officer, such as organizing inclusive events that allow everyone to participate, spectate and enjoy.
As the Sports Officer, I would love to enhance the number of intercollegiate games and games with other societies within UCL, because a little bit of competition never hurt anyone! I would also love to add more of an emphasis on the mental and physical health benefits of playing sports by having more social sessions where everyone, no matter the ability, can drop in and have some fun.
So, whether we have the next Messi or LeBron James hiding in our community, or someone has never picked up a ball since they were forced to in P.E., I will make sure the sports scene in the ACS is top tier for everyone.
