Abacus Society: President

What encouraged me to first get involved with ABACUS was how inclusive and welcoming it was. Now, I want to extend my involvement with ABACUS so that other members, current and future, can encapsulate all the positive aspects the society holds. Coming into ABACUS I wasn't sure what to expect but I was positively surprised by how quickly I formed friendships and how much of a community it is. I want to run as president to reach out to UCL's community and let them know such a society is present and that we're patiently waiting for more to join us. As a first year rep, I have the responsibility of organising an event. When considering costs, logistics and small details, I prioritised inclusivity and feasibility. After emailing and calling back and forth with the manager, I was still personally unsatisfied with the offer given. After I suggested that other FYRs and I go to the venue and, for lack of a more professional term, squeeze this guy for everything he's got (but nicely), we achieved a deal we deemed best- and at a much better cost. Anyone could sign up and enjoy themselves to a memorable night. As an organiser, I am proud of our efforts to achieve this. I strongly believe that this event will be a huge success due to the negotiating tactics I learned from my Chinese grandma, my attentiveness, and dedication from my fellow FYRs. I believe I played the role of director and team member to a president-status standard and will continue to do so in future endeavours.
