Karthig Thillaivasan

Hello, I'm Karthig Thillaivasan and I'd like to take this opportunity to run for the Genetics and Oncology Chair for UCL Medical Society. Having organised many large-scale events in various subcommittees of Medical Society, including the UCL National Paediatric Conference, I've developed an interest and motivation in various fields of medicine and most importantly got to grips with the responsibilities required to lead events. As the Genetics and Oncology Chair, I'd have the opportunity to spread enthusiasm in this field and enable you to build a network with world-renowned neurologists through the organisation of stimulating events, discussing current issues and future Cancer and Genetic advances. I have attended many intriguing Oncology events, such as the talk on tumour discovery in bilateral neuroblastoma and the UCL National Undergraduate Oncology Conference, which enabled me to build a network with renowned oncologists. Through my experience, I intend to lead events and create an interactive atmosphere for students to explore cancer research and other specialities in greater depth through a mentoring scheme and journal club. Finally, I would be very keen to fundraise for charities that support patients with cancer and those in low-income countries. It would be a privilege to be a part of this society and I would be very grateful for your vote and I ensure to be a dedicated Genetics and Oncology Lead, working hard to spread the enthusiasm through intriguing events.

Kirthika Janaarthanan

Hi, I’m Kirthika, going into 4th year after just having done my iBSc in Oncology.

I would really like to be the next chair of Genetics and Oncology as I am really passionate in this field and would love to give others the opportunity to find out more about the science linked to this area of medicine as well as careers in Genetics and Oncology.

Previous experiences:

  • Being an events coordinator in Oncology society this year, I helped arrange the ‘Careers in Oncology’ panel event
  • As UCL Medical society Publicity Officer this year, I organised my time well and have a good understanding of all the different types of events that can be offered in this society
  • Having done the Oncology iBSc, I have gained insights into the different aspects of this field of medicine and made contacts in this field
  • Having attended the Oxford university Oncology UNIQ summer school, I have experienced working in labs and with specialist researchers in the field

Overall, I would make the most of this opportunity and hope to encourage many students at UCL to develop their understanding of this field and guide them in new opportunities.
