Emmanuel Beltazar

Hi, I am Emmanuel!

As a third-year medical student with a passion for endocrinology, I am excited to run for the position of Endocrinology Chair. With a commitment to making a positive impact, I aim to enhance the experience of members in the following ways:

  1. Inter-disciplinary collaborations: I will establish connections with other medical societies and organizations in the field of endocrinology to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange. By forging new partnerships, we can enhance research opportunities and expand our resources.
  2. Diversifying educational events: I will ensure that our speaker series includes a wide range of professionals from various areas of endocrinology. This includes both young and adult endocrinologists, as well endocrinologists working privately. This will expose our members to different career paths and let them appreciate how diversity of the field.

But I also believe learning should go hand in hand with some fun, especially since we all know how stressful university can be. So here is a twist:

  1. MOVIE NIGHTS: Get those hormones up and running! From adrenaline-pumping action flick that will keep you on the edge of your seat, to enjoying a heart-warming love story while sipping hot-chocolate, our movie night will have it all. So, sit back, relax, and make some friends and be ready for an emotional rollercoaster.

  1. Volunteering: Let's come together for regular volunteering events that focus on endocrinology-related initiatives. These activities will not only make you feel good but also create

My interest in endocrinology began during a clinical research placement, where I shadowed patient follow-up meetings within the EMPA-KIDNEY trial. This trial analysed the efficacy of empagliflozin as a chronic kidney disease treatment and included many diabetic patients. Speaking to patients struggling with multiple endocrinological diseases made me realise how debilitating these conditions can be and prompted me to do further research into the effect of hyperglycaemia on our bodily systems. I continued exploring the complications of diabetes diagnosis during my Extended Project Qualification. Having thoroughly enjoyed learning about the links between different hormone axes and how they contribute to disease development during this year's ESR module, I am confident endocrinology is a speciality I wish to pursue.

Rates of various endocrinological diseases such as diabetes and obesity are increasing rapidly and so I believe it is important for future doctors to fully understand how to treat patients suffering from these conditions. To do this, I will reach out to specialists in this area and invite speakers to share their experience of treating these diseases in a clinical setting, with the aim of providing insight into some of the challenges faced while providing medical care. I also hope to run an ESR tutorial for future Year Two students, as this module is only taught within a four-week time frame and explores difficult concepts that are essential to understand. I would also like to provide resources and links to those
