Hello! It’s me, Roy, your local friendly Asian American/Taiwanese American who restarted the American Society!
Although I have not been as involved with Taiwanese Society as anticipated, I still highly appreciate its work, and would therefore like to help out how I can.
If elected, I will:
- Be highly approachable: I love addressing questions and concerns around the clock, at events, and over nighttime messages. As a notoriously loquacious native English speaker with decent Mandarin skills, I also am comfortable speaking at length in either language or even with code-switching!
- Consider cultural and current event context: As someone who grew up in the US, travels to Taiwan and other parts of Asia from time to time, and now studies here in the UK, I am adept at juggling various cultures and how they influence each other. I therefore won’t tell you to pretend cultural and current events stress doesn’t exist, but rather help you build resilience and embrace different possibilities.
-
Proactively minimise welfare risks, including by participating in event planning with other officers, collecting feedback, and maintaining confidentiality and discretion when called for by the situation.
The world is becoming increasingly stressful and bewildering for almost everyone, and the root causes of this are not always something even a well-organised student group can fix alone. However, as your Welfare Officer, I will help us navigate the world we have so we can build the world we want.
