Yes, I admit I started off as a creative writer- the subject that instilled a sense of dread in my STEM-loving peers was the same thing that got me through the day. It was special to me; coming to this country with only Urdu in my back pocket, to be able to bear and express my soul in a way that landed two consecutive wins of a regional creative writing competition. Seeing my work published, being able to trace my words on printed ink, was the first time I understood how people could be in pursuit of one thing all their lives. This is what would drive me to read and edit all your unique submissions, because I learn best from collecting viewpoints, grasping how others see my same world in sometimes an amazingly different way.
At the same time, I cannot shake off the truth with which mathematics brings a constant sense of reliance to my anxious self, and the creativity with which chemists shape our world. This yin/yang I bring, balancing logical writing with a flair for storytelling, is something I wish to incorporate into editing, with the collaborative process being a genuinely enjoyable part of my scientific experience.
My detail-oriented editing process is probably best demonstrated by my three-part biological/mathematical EPQ, requiring non-stop deep-dives into arcane scientific fields during my summer. I need something to stop me getting bored! Simultaneously, I understand how to deliver pieces that also appeal to the masses, being a regular photographer for UCL events.
