Tobias Strachota

Upon joining UCL, although I was excited by the scale, diversity and energy of London student life, I also found myself at times overwhelmed and slightly estranged, especially because I did not know many people at first. It was through Austrian Society that I was able to stay connected to familiar traditions and find an immediate sense of welcome, community and home.

In running for President, I aim to build upon the excellent work done by previous committees. From pub socials and inspiring talks to ballroom dancing, Christmas markets and cultural events, Austrian Society has created a space that brings together Austrians, people with Austrian connections and anyone interested in Austrian culture.

As President, I would preserve what already makes the society special, while making it even more active, visible and welcoming. I would do this through a balanced mix of relaxed social events, cultural activities, academic and career-oriented talks and collaborations with other societies. Especially knowing that the Austro-Germanic cultural space is not defined by national borders, it makes sense to actively engage with the German and Swiss societies, among others.

Austrian Society should be as much a cultural platform as a “home away from home”. Ultimately, I would like to help the society reach everyone interested in Austria and its rich cultural heritage, while still maintaining the homey feel that attracted me to it in the first place.

Servus! I'm very eager to run for President of the UCL Austrian Society, as although I am not natively Austrian, my passion for the nation's culture and its people have driven me to run for this role. I would like to shape the society as a gateway for those into Austrian culture, and as a watering hole for Austrians and Austrophiles to come together alike. If elected I would like to propose many interactive events, such as a visit to the Austrian embassy, a trip to the London Austrian Society ball, waltz lessons, or even just eating some good Kaiserschmarrn, and so much more. As President my aim would be to interact with other societies, aiming to expand our community to its fullest potential. As I have been active in political events in Austria, such as with the European Youth Parliament in Graz and Vienna, I would like to broadcast such opportunities to the society, also work closely with arranging and promoting events in Austria, as well as London. I look forward to  working together with all members of the society to get the most out of their membership, and to a great year for the UCL Austrian Society.
