Hi, I’m Yvette Cheng, a second-year Civil Engineering student, and I’m applying to be Society Advisor for TEDxUCL because I believe in the power of thoughtful ideas—and supporting the people who bring them to life.
With a background in competitive debate, I understand the pressure and preparation that go into sharing ideas clearly and confidently. I also completed the Technical Journalism course by Dr. Sunny Bains, where I explored how to communicate complex topics in technology and science with clarity and impact—core to TEDx's mission.
I’ve also run a food business, worked as a private chef, and tutored maths and physics for three years. These roles taught me how to manage logistics, support individuals under pressure, and maintain calm, reliable systems. I’m fluent in Mandarin and English and passionate about inclusive, cross-disciplinary dialogue.
I’m a strong team player and genuinely happy to support others. As Society Advisor, I’d provide steady, behind-the-scenes guidance—empowering the committee, not directing it. Whether it’s event planning, speaker prep, or just being a sounding board, I’m here to help TEDxUCL thrive with clarity, kindness, and structure.
TEDx is about ideas worth spreading—and I’m here to help build the support systems that make that possible.

After serving as President of TEDxUCL this past academic year, I would love to remain involved with the society by being an advisor. I believe my experience leading the society has equipped me with valuable insight into the logistical, technical, and planning aspects of organising TEDx events. I’m keen to give back and support the incoming team by offering guidance and continuity, and helping ensure a smooth and successful year ahead for the society.
