Conor Melville

I joined Medieval society during my first year at UCL, during a time where I was mentally and emotionally struggling to adapt to and cope with University life. This society helped me get through the first year of university and I am grateful for the relationships I have built through it, and consequently I am very committed to running the society as best as possible.

As leader, I would see the society continue to host a diverse range of events, such as museum visits, historical tours, and movie nights. Furthermore, I would in particular like to increase the amount of group seminars where we would discuss certain historical events or figures. I remember fondly that we had several of these during my first year at university, including one on the War of the Roses, and I would like to bring these back. This would hopefully include collaboration with other societies where relevant for these discussion seminars, for example Islamic society if we discuss relations between the Islamic and Christian world in the medieval period, which particularly interests me, or English society if we discuss Medieval English literature.

This plan would be great for getting others interested in the society as it would attract people from other departments who would not necessarily instinctively think of coming to Medieval society events, and it may help reach people who are struggling at university like I was. For these reasons, I would be a great candidate and I am very motivated to run the society.
