Artemis Georghiou

Hi, I’m Artemis and I’d love to be your Diversity & Inclusion Officer!

So quick story time:
My mum has been dancing pretty much since she could walk — Royal Ballet School, dance festivals… the whole lot. My dad, on the other hand, had never danced in his life. But one random afternoon at uni, they both ended up at a dance society class — and well that’s how they met! They went on to become Cambridge Latin dance champions (somehow), and eventually got married!

What I love about this is that it just shows how dance really is for everyone — whether you’ve trained for years or are just figuring out your left foot from your right. Dance is a space to express yourself, have fun, meet people, and feel part of something. That’s exactly the kind of space I want to help create. I’d make sure our society is welcoming, accessible, and safe for everyone — whatever your background, identity, or dance experience. I’d love to get more people involved through socials, workshops, and maybe run events like celebrating styles from around the world — helping people feel closer to home. For example, for me, something like Greek dancing would definitely remind me of home, which is nice especially for freshers at the start of uni.

Personally, I’ve done a lot of dance over the years and so I’m really passionate about making dance feel open to everyone — whether you’re just testing the waters or already obsessed — and I’d love to help make that happen as part of the committee!! 🫶

Webbe Chu

I've loved being a part of dance society this year, and I'd love to be involved at a higher capacity!

I think this role is particularly special as I believe that everyone, regardless of background, identity, or experience level, deserves to dance! And I know I have the experience and drive to facilitate that!

If elected, I’ll work to

-create inclusive events for all experiences

-spotlight underrepresented voices

-build safer spaces where everyone feels they truly belong

-catered workshops for different lived cultural experiences

Sophia Nanthakumar

Dance has always been a huge part of my life, and since joining UCL, the Dance Society has been the highlight of my time here. I’ve loved every moment - whether it’s traveling and competing with the competition team, performing in Triple Bill and Freshers’ Show, but most of all, meeting so many incredible people who share the same passion. That’s why I’d love the opportunity to contribute as your first Diversity and Inclusion Officer!

As someone from a South Asian background, I’ve often noticed how underrepresented my ethnicity is in the dance world, especially in mainstream styles like ballet and jazz. My favourite thing about UCL Dance Society is how truly diverse and welcoming it is - we have dancers from all over the world, and that sense of representation made me feel at home from the start. I believe that kind of diversity helps new members feel seen, supported and excited to get involved.

One idea I’d love to introduce is a buddy or dance family system - where freshers are paired with experienced members who can guide them through everything from auditions to shows to socials. Coming out of my first year, I know how overwhelming it can all feel at first, and I think this would be a great way to help new members feel more confident and connected.

I’m really excited about the chance to support the society, help it grow, and keep making it a space where everyone feels welcome and celebrated.

Sahena Hurburun

I’m excited to run for Diversity and Inclusion Officer because fostering a welcoming, equitable environment isn’t just a responsibility—it’s a passion of mine. Throughout my time in the Dance Society, I’ve seen firsthand how community can thrive when inclusivity is prioritized. Whether attending ballet classes, volunteering as a Ticketing Officer at competitions, or engaging in society events, I’ve always valued the importance of representation and belonging.

My experience in leadership, communication, and event coordination equips me well for this role. As a Ticketing Officer, I managed logistics and ensured accessibility for diverse participants. My background in marketing, from managing a social media brand to designing content, has taught me how to effectively engage audiences and create spaces where everyone feels seen and heard. From participating in competitions like L’Oréal Brandstorm to collaborating on global initiatives, I’ve developed a strategic mindset that balances inclusivity with innovation. As Diversity and Inclusion Officer, I’ll make sure everyone feels valued—whether that’s through better accessibility in events, amplifying diverse voices, or ensuring our communications reflect the richness of our community. I’ll encourage open conversations, advocate for underrepresented groups, and collaborate with the committee to shape a more inclusive society. With my blend of leadership, creativity, and analytical thinking, I’m ready to make meaningful change.

Saloni Shirke

As someone who has experienced firsthand how powerful and transformative dance can be, both as a form of self-expression and as a way to build community, I’m passionate about making sure everyone feels welcome, represented, and empowered in our society. I’m running for Diversity and Inclusion Officer because I truly believe that every dancer, no matter their background, identity, or experience level, deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

I want to help ensure that our classes, events, and communications are genuinely accessible and inclusive, especially for those who may have felt left out of traditional dance spaces. I’m really excited about the opportunity to work closely with the welfare and volunteering officer to spotlight diverse dance styles, amplify underrepresented voices, and create a space where everyone, from first-timers to experienced performers, feels confident and valued.

More than anything, I see this role as a chance to listen, uplift, and collaborate. I’ll bring enthusiasm, compassion, and a little sparkle to everything I do, whether that’s holding the committee accountable or just being someone members know they can reach out to. I’m excited to help shape a society where we celebrate individuality and move together as one inclusive, vibrant community, both on and off the dance floor.

Mashall Argandiwal

Hi everyone!

I am standing for Diversity and Inclusion Officer because I believe our dance society should be a space that embraces individuality, where background, identity and belief are spotlighted rather than buried, in a way that everyone feels safe, valued, and genuinely included.

As an immigrant from a Muslim background, I understand how powerful it is to feel welcomed, and how isolating it can be when you’re not. That’s what drives me to help build a community where every member is looked after so they can nurture their talents.

Inclusivity to me means action:

  • Ensuring our merch is affordable and has modest options
  • Having an active support system for members who may feel isolated due to their background, identity or beliefs
  • Alcohol-free socials
  • It means listening - but also speaking up!

I consider myself a friendly, warm person, and I want everyone to feel they can approach and talk to me — whether it’s about concern, ideas, or just needing a bit of support, and I’m not afraid to speak my mind when it comes to the safety and well-being of our members. Because no one should have to compromise who they are to be part of a dance space.

Dance is for everyone — and I‘ll work hard to make sure our society reflects that in everything we do! 🌍 💗
