Mathura Kathirgamanathan

My name is Mathura, and I would absolutely love to be your RUMS General Secretary for this year!

Communication is key - it is a well-known phrase you hear far and wide, but I believe it really is the KEY to what makes a good Secretary.

As this is a new role to RUMS, it is super important to me that this role makes a true difference to the RUMS family, and I want to do this through consistent communication!

I am an organiser and workaholic by nature and am not new to admin tasks through current roles such as being on the Events subcommittee and as an Academic Rep.

As your Secretary, I would strive to make sure that:

  • Any feedback given comes back to you and that you are kept updated
  • To work with others to finalise the RUMS Website, so that information can be spread to you more easily
  • To give you more transparency and awareness of RUMS meetings through regular updates
  • To open up more platforms, or to make more use of our social media, so that your ideas or concerns come across more efficiently.

It would mean a lot if you could trust me with your vote! I don’t want to be a Secretary that is hidden behind their computer screen! I hope to be a friendly face on campus, and someone that you can come to with your ideas or concerns!

Just look out for that green jacket of mine! :)

Laura Tavares

My goal is ensuring transparency in a consistent, efficient manner without increasing subcommittees’ workload. Hence, in addition to maintaining an active social media presence, bulletin and comprehensive website, I propose:

Unifying all RUMS-related documents:

  • Creating a platform where all documents are uploaded.
  • Include: meeting notes, photos, financial plans and reflections + student feedback on events.
  • Goal 1: promote continuity and long-term growth by ensuring following year’s members have clear expectations and know areas of improvement.
  • Goal 2: encourage partnerships by allowing subcommittees and societies access to each others’ documents and, thus, discover activities of common interest.

Creating a RUMS newsletter:

  • Email to all medical students.
  • Include: updates from all RUMS subcommittees and societies (submitted by respective leads).
  • Disclose: achievements, short- and long-term plans, contact details and short descriptions of subcommittees’ members.
  • Opportunity for students who are not part of a subcommittee to volunteer with specific events, as well as allowing subcommittees to request students’ help ahead of time.
  • Encourage subcommittee reps at each society to interact and align strategies.

RUMS-only calendar:

  • Goals: prevent scheduling overlap of events, improve students’ maximisation of time, facilitate searching, decrease event promotion posts that go unnoticed in group-chats.
  • Include option to link events to personal UCL Outlook emails.
Udhay S Cheema

Yo everyone, my name's Udhay and I’m running to be your RUMS General Secretary for this year.

I'd like to start with 3 words to describe myself: A SWEET ONE

Besides my great humour, I’m looking forward to bringing a whole host of things to RUMS this year.

RUMS is a society we interact with every day; through it I’ve been lucky enough to meet amazing people. I look forward to doing the same this year, with an added purpose and on a wider scale.

As Gen Sec I aim to:

  • Implement a better communication system between the society and you guys, ensuring consistent contact through social media, being an approachable person on campus to talk to and keeping everyone posted through a monthly RUMS broadcast.

  • Bring more transparency to RUMS so you are aware of our ongoing goals and progress; allowing everyone to give their opinions, concerns and suggestions to make a more well-rounded and enjoyable experience in RUMS.

  • Provide an extra level of management/structure within the committee; to make sure that communication between the subcommittees is seamless which I can do through the close-knit relationships I hold with the VPs.

Finally, I look forward to bringing a bit of me. It don’t always have to be serious; it’s about making it fun and getting stuff done at the same time – something I always vouch to do.

If anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to message me or find me slaving away on campus somewhere Monday – Friday.

Peace and always,

Udhay or No Way

Zainab Shafiq

RUMS has always been an amazing and supportive community. This year I joined the Events Subcommittee; given how rewarding this has been, I’d like to take on an even more active role in RUMS as General Secretary. I hope to work with the RUMS Committee and others inside & outside RUMS to make it even better.

“But what does the RUMS General Secretary even do?” A fair question to ask. They’re responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly, and communication is efficient & consistent. This means recording meeting minutes, sending emails, and other admin work - keeping everything organised, and ensuring everyone in RUMS is kept updated.

I plan to amplify communication with the RUMS population not only through word of mouth & the Instagram account, but also by running RUMS Twitter and Facebook pages. I aim to revamp the RUMS Website, ensuring it’s updated at least weekly. Having all the RUMS information neatly in one place is vital for consistent communication and comprehension. I also want to create a platform for anonymous feedback to be provided to RUMS, as I think this is important.

I believe I have the skills for this role as I’m reliable, efficient, and well-organised, so I can be trusted with admin work. I’m dedicated and a team-player, evidenced not only by my roles on the Events Subcommittee and as Academic Officer of MedSoc Pathology, but also by other leadership positions I’ve held, including organising my Year 13 prom.

Don’t throw your vote away. Vote Zainab!

Rohma Shahzad

Hey, I'm Rohma Shahzad a 4th-year medical school - before this feels any more like an OSCE station, let me tell you a bit about my role so far. I’ve been involved in the RUMS operation and finance sub-committee for 2 consecutive years. Many might be thinking, what does that sub-committee do? Well, I have helped the treasurer of RUMS:

  1. Arrange and hold the RUMS restart conference
  2. Secure RUMS sponsorship deals and organise freshers’ fairs
  3. Social media posts on the RUMS accounts
  4. Along with many more projects coming this year!

Being General Secretary would mean a lot to me - RUMS played a huge role in making me feel at home at UCL, particularly as it can feel overwhelming at times, which is why I wanted to pass it on! My aims as general secretary are to:

  • Guarantee the smooth running of RUMS by ensuring efficient communication between RUMS VP’s
  • Ensure that all concerns are taken seriously and dealt with in a timely manner
  • Stay on top of social media posts to keep everyone updated about RUMS which will allow everyone to get involved
  • Work on revamping the RUMS website to create a useful ‘go to’ platform for everything RUMS
  • More people to get involved and amplify the voices within and beyond RUMS

RUMS can make these 6+ years at UCL unforgettable, and I want all of you to feel part of the community, whether you’re freshers or in clinical years! By helping to make RUMS more organised, I hope to get more people involved. Feel free to message me if you have any questions!
