Music Society: Symphony Chorus Manager

I would love to help Amy with this important role, having sung in Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir last year, and being a principal role in last year's UCOpera production! Last year I completed my ARSM Diploma in Classical singing and have performed with choirs in the UK and abroad for the last 10 years. 

Symphony Chorus is great fun and I'd love to co-manage it. I hope to maintain the high standard of singing with Amy, be approachable to the many members of Symphony Chorus this year and encourage everyone to throw themselves at the music and just enjoy singing some beautiful pieces (And of course provide an array of biscuits)! There's nothing better than singing alongside like-minded, friendly people :)

Hi everyone! I'm a 2022 undergrad fresher from an international high school in China. I'd like to be the symphony chorus manager, because I'm proud of being passionate and relatively experienced to organize our wonderful chorus by assisting us both on- and off-stage. 

Cecilia Wu has: 

1. joined school choir for 10+ years
2. conducted student chamber ensemble in high school for 2 years
3. taught USAD (a multi-subject competition) Music for 2 years, leading the team to achieve 9th place in China
4. taught a handful of peers to sing
5. learned to play the piano for 12+ years
6. got a few certificates from ABRSM since a few years ago
7. joined pop/ jazz band as a bassist for 5+ years, actively leading most of the rehearsals

More about chamber ensemble conductor experience: 

As a conductor in an amateur student ensemble, most of the work I've done was not all about the delicate harmonies but more about a harmonic group of music-lovers. We were the ones driven off from music because of diverged academic pursuits. My intention was to provide them with a place to play with music.

This was done mainly by:

• rearranging each instrument for repertoires we like (ranging from Bolero to game BGM tracks)
• organizing high-quality rehearsals (with sufficient knowledge)
• giving decent chances for each musician to perform on stage (around 30 students have been actively participating in 20+ performances in 2 years)
• effective communication with musicians and organizers of events for performance

Hello! My name is Lydia, I'm a second year History and Politics of the Americas student and I'm standing to be your Symphony Chorus Manager alongside Amy. (You may have already seen me during rehearsals in the Alto section!)

During my first year I attended many of the Music Society concerts, loving the diverse range of music and how friendly everyone was. I knew I wanted to get involved this year, and I joined the chorus due to my longstanding love of singing. I enjoy every minute of rehearsals, and I'm so excited for all of our performances this year. 

Having made the jump from singing lessons to a four part choir, I know it can be daunting, challenging and so rewarding all in one. What made my first choir experience at home so memorable was how kind, patient and lovely everyone was. As co-manager, I want to ensure that the chorus remains accessible to every singing ability, and that everyone feels welcome and has fun! I would also love to expand our repertoire and maximise our opportunities to hold concerts throughout the year.

I enjoy working alongside others and have held organisational positions in the past which has given me valuable experience in co-ordinating large groups of people. 

Singing at UCL has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my university experience so far, I have already made lasting friendships and I am excited to see what the year brings!
