I am standing as first-year rep because after only a few weeks of trying BJJ it has quickly become one of my favourite past times so far at UCL. Subsequently, I want the club to continue to thrive and for more first years to join and help expand it.
I’m running for First Year Representative for UCL BJJ. I hope to help develop the UCL BJJ community and enable it to continue being a safe and fun way for people to access the gentle art. With nearly 1 year of BJJ experience (both in Gi and in No Gi), I still have a long way to go with my BJJ journey but I know first hand how rewarding and challenging it is.
Over my time as First Year Representative, I wish to accomplish the following:
- Develop more opportunities for beginners to get into the sport with UCLBJJ
- Bring forward more beginner friendly competitions
- Act as a voice for all those new to the society and the club as an avenue for feedback and improvement of the society.
I hope to bring my skillsets from the past to help enable me in my role, with my time as sprint squad captain in my previous school guiding me in how to develop people through sport and how to create welcoming training environments. Furthermore, I had led many large teams for volunteering projects in Singapore, which allowed me to balance the perspectives of many people and constantly meet the needs of my team to ensure the best experience for them. I hope to bring these skills forward to UCLBJJ to further strength and grow this wonderful community.
I think I'll be able to provide insight into what it feels like to be both new to university life and being new to the sport. I believe this will help in the organisation of events tailored to, or including, first years/beginners to the sport.
I'm also relatively well organised. Furthermore, I have found I am already quite passionate about the club and the sport, and thus will give the role my all.
