My connection to Latin America is both personal and academic. After solo travelling across the region for over 15 months from learning to weave rugs in Oaxaca, hiking to La Ciudad Perdida in Colombia, and living in Buenos Aires for 6 months, and all the inbetween, I developed a lasting admiration for its people and cultural richness. These experiences, along with my fluency in Spanish from my degree in French and Spanish, have shaped a deep curiosity for Latin America’s political and social realities. I have chosen all my Spanish modules centering on Latin American history, literature, and activism, which has strengthened my academic commitment to the region. As Director of Academic Affairs, I would use my experiences living with indigenous communities, involvement with NGO ‘Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo,’ volunteering building houses with Techo Argentina and helping environmental organisation, to organise dynamic talks and panels on issues facing the region - from Indigenous rights to economic innovation and environmental change. I’d also aim to collaborate with embassies, NGOs, and UCL departments to bring diverse voices directly to campus.I want to make the society a space where curiosity turns into understanding, where members not only learn about Latin America but engage with it through dialogue and shared passion.

Rebecca Tibaldi

Hola! Hi! My name is Rebecca, and I’m standing for Director of Academic Affairs because of my strong academic and professional interest in Latin America. As part of my course, I study Latin American Politics, which has deepened my understanding of the region’s political and social dynamics. Last summer, I interned at the Mission of Peru at the UN in Geneva, where I worked on regional policy issues and gained first-hand insight into Latin America’s role in international diplomacy.

As Head of Events for the UCL Diplomacy Society, I have organised high-profile events with diplomats and academics, developing strong skills in planning, coordination, and communication. I hope to bring this experience to the Latin American Society by creating engaging and thought-provoking academic events that highlight the region’s diversity and global importance.
