Hiking Club: Secretary

I am standing to be Hiking Club's secretary to help keep communication running smoothly, and to do my part to help UCL Hiking continue to grow over the next year!

We are the biggest club at UCL, and we have an awesome community. But our vast membership also means its vital that members receive clear and timely communication so that no one is left out or left behind because they didn't know about an event. As secretary, I will ensure that all communication is quick and clear, and people who contact us directly get a fast and informed reply (after all we're not a dodgy ex!)

As interim secretary, I have already started working behind the scenes to improve the way we do things:

• I'm working on a new emailing system that will keep everyone informed of all the cool stuff we get up to so you don't miss a thing!
• Eyeing up club merch? I'll be ensuring we have items in stock and organised so that your order will definitely be here in time for Christmas
• Did you get a great picture on one of our hikes or trips? I want a space where you can show them off! - and maybe win a prize (ooooh prizes!)

What experience do I bring?

• I've been involved in scouting for over a decade, including as a leader for the last five years so I'm no stranger to hiking and the outdoors
• I already have experience working on committees and with teams, so I know how to organise and prioritise to make sure we're delivering for you

I’m standing for election as Hiking Club Secretary because I love exploring the outdoors and sharing those experiences with others. The Hiking Club is such a vibrant, welcoming community and I want to help it continue to thrive. I enjoy reaching out in thoughtful ways and connecting with people on a deeper level, even as an introvert and I believe those kinds of connections make our adventures more meaningful. I bring strong organizational skills, a commitment to supporting others and care about creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels comfortable joining in. I’m Maryam, and I’d love to be your Hiking Society Secretary! I’m a second year BSc Psychology student, and since joining the society earlier this year, I’ve really enjoyed being part of a group that brings people together to explore and take a break from city life. I’m organised, reliable, and genuinely enjoy keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes - from tracking details to making sure everyone’s got the info they need. I’ve had experience handling admin responsibilities and maintaining accurate records, and I aim to bring that same structure to hiking society! As Secretary, I’ll make sure plans stay on track, communication stays clear, and our society stays well organised.
