Candidates

Sruthika Karthigeyan

I am standing for the role of Marketing Officer because I am passionate about effectively communicating the vital ethical issues where healthcare, law, and innovation intersect. As a first-year Business and Health MSci student with a strong interest in healthcare policy and ethics, I am particularly drawn to the complex challenges presented by AI and genetic technologies in medicine.

My exploration into bioethics began with an EPQ on the ethics of human genetic engineering, where I examined the moral boundaries of scientific progress and earned an A* for my work. Since then, I’ve deepened this interest through academic research and part-time work at a women’s health organisation, where I manage social media and translate complex medical topics into clear, accessible content.

I also bring strong visual communication skills, shaped by experience designing campaigns with Canva and leading student societies: including serving as Chair of the Psychology Society and Vice Chair of the Animal Welfare Society. These roles taught me how to turn ideas into engaging, inclusive content.

As Marketing Officer, I would build on the society's consistent, visually striking social media identity to highlight its values and invite wider conversation around healthcare ethics. With a creative eye, attention to detail, and genuine commitment to clear, ethical communication, I’m eager to contribute to a cause that matters deeply to me.

Rebecca Lay

Hi, I’m Rebecca! a second-year student studying Applied Medical Sciences.

As Marketing Officer, I want to introduce a more fun, engaging, and inclusive vibe to the society, encouraging students to join and have thoughtful conversations about medical ethics.

I believe communication, organisation, and creativity are essential for this role, allowing me to effectively share ideas, manage responsibilities, and represent the society authentically.

If elected as Marketing Officer, I intend to draw attention to:

  • Uplifting and representing the society by highlighting its unique space for exploring debates in medical law and bioethics.
  • Building community by showcasing members’ ideas, contributions, and celebrating their achievements!
  • Boosting social media presence to keep students connected, allowing input on discussion topics.
  • Engaging content to draw in students from all courses - whether they study Medicine, Law, Philosophy, or simply have an interest in ethical issues in healthcare.
  • Ensuring consistent content reflective of the depth of topics discussed. Such as a weekly “Theme or Thought of the week” post, enabling students to think about current issues beyond society events.
  • Producing creative, eye-catching promotions of society events, encouraging participation and enthusiasm!

Most importantly, I hope to work as part of a team that encourages curiosity and discussion, making the next year of the Bioethics and Medical Law Society fun, inclusive, and inspiring for everyone!

Nadia Soufraki

I am standing for Marketing Officer to promote engagement with the intersection of law and the life sciences. Attending the STEMathon on drug patenting reinforced my interest in how legal regulation shapes the pharmaceutical industry. My Extended Project Qualification on the ethics of vitamin D fortification in staple foods explored similar themes, examining how public health policies balance the Pillars of Bioethics. This research deepened my understanding of the ethical foundations of medical law and reaffirmed my interest in the field.

I aim to pursue a career as a lawyer in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector, and this role offers the opportunity to engage with the ethical and regulatory challenges that define these areas. I would be a strong Marketing Officer because of my experience promoting societies and events effectively. As the former Chair of my school’s Public Speaking Society, I promoted events through email campaigns, social media, and posters, increasing attendance and participation. This experience strengthened my communication and outreach skills and taught me how to tailor messages to different audiences.

As an active member of the Law Society, I stay informed about developments in the legal sector and their intersection with medicine and biotechnology. I would use this insight to market events that appeal to students interested in both law and the life sciences, helping the Society expand its reach and strengthen its interdisciplinary presence.

Emma Wrenn

I’m passionate about medical law and bioethics, and I would love to help grow enthusiasm around this fascinating field amongst more UCL students. I’ll help utilise the society’s online presence to reach as many students as possible, and I’d love to collaborate with other UCL societies to organise events such as careers talks, debates and socials.
