Being genderfluid, I often feel isolated from cultures I consider myself a part of. If something is viewed as inherently gendered, I'm unable to devote consistent effort to it, since if my gender fluctuates, I risk feeling at best out of place, and at worst unsafe. I'm now in my fourth year of SFFS, and I've never once been made to feel anything less than welcomed. We are a haven, and my intention is to ensure it stays that way for long after I've gone.
Much of this is down to the care and love of the people who call the society home - but as a collective, we can go further. I want the way we celebrate who we are to be a central feature of SFFS, and the mere existence of the position for which I'm applying makes it clear that many of you do, too. I'd love for those outside our society to see us as a haven, too - somewhere they can explore hobbies that, elsewhere, might feel inaccessible.
As such, I'd like to create regular events run for, and by, women, people of colour, queer and genderqueer people, ideally open to those outside the society. The events' nature would be determined by members of those groups, and ideas such as women's gaming events have already been floated. The intent of this is that anyone wondering whether sci-fi or fantasy spaces are for them is reassured by the notion that they are not alone, there are others like them, and those others are loved in the wider space of SFFS.
