Jelissa Ngako

Dear ACS Members,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Jelissa, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of First Year Representative for the African and Caribbean Society.

In my brief time here on a year abroad, I've been heartened by the warm welcome extended by each member of ACS. It's this sense of community and support that has inspired me to run for the position of First Year Rep. Back in Washington DC I served as the president of the Black Student Union, where I passionately advocated for change and worked towards fostering a strong and united community.

I am standing for the position of First Year Rep because I believe in the power of unity and the strength that comes from a supportive community. As a black woman, I understand the challenges we face, the feeling of being an easy scapegoat, and the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels valued and supported.

My vision for ACS is rooted in the belief that we can create a community where everyone, regardless of gender, feels a profound sense of belonging. I aim to ensure that no one experiences the isolation that can sometimes accompany being a newcomer. I want ACS to be a place where love and joy abound, where we can share laughter, celebrate each other's achievements, and navigate challenges together.

Being a part of ACS is not just about joining a society; it's about becoming part of a family. I am committed to fostering an environment where every member, from the first-year students to the seasoned veterans, feels heard,

I enjoy being a part of UCL’s African Caribbean Society, and being involved with many events such as netball and panafrik I believe I am well equipped to form positive inter year relationships as well as providing a voice for first year students’ opinions and concerns. I would love to see ACS up on its feet and therefore would be grateful to provide the gateway between its newest members and its organisers.
