Idea for research
Naz is a sexual health and mental heath charity that serves Global Majority and LGBTQ+ populations across London. Our journey began with the explicit aim of raising awareness about HIV and ensuring that Brown, Black and Global Majority populations received the treatment they required. Our services have now expanded to provide psycho-sexual support in various forms- counselling, STI testing, peer support groups, and research and advocacy. Black, brown and Global Majority populations have historically faced numerous structural and cultural barriers to accessing quality sexual health and mental health provision. We aim to bridge this gap by providing culturally appropriate services to improve health outcomes of populations that have historically been left behind.

They are interested in working with a dedicated master's student on any of the following topics and welcome student proposals.

1. Asylum seekers and refugees’ sexual health
What models of care best support the sexual and reproductive health needs of refugees and asylum seekers?
2. Young people and HIV awareness
What types of education or communication are most effective in improving awareness and prevention in young people under 25?
3. Young women of colour and sexual health experiences
How do young women of colour navigate consent, boundaries, and negotiation in sexual relationships?
4. South Asian communities and sexual health access
How do cultural and religious beliefs influence sexual health discussions and care-seeking behaviour?
What role can culturally competent service design play in improving access?
5. Criminal justice and holistic support for people leaving prison
How effective are current wraparound support programmes in improving health and wellbeing of people leaving prison?
What evidence exists of successful reintegration and care models for this population?
6. Race hate, societal change, and mental health
How is the rise in race hate and far-right sentiment affecting the mental health of Global Majority communities?
How can mental health services respond to the compounded trauma of racism and discrimination?
7. Weathering in the UK sociopolitical climate
What are the links between structural violence, political rhetoric, and physical health outcomes?
How can/what is needed for health systems address the cumulative impact of racism and inequality on long-term wellbeing?
8. Attitudes of young people and parental approaches
How do parental communication styles shape young people’s understanding of sexual health and relationships?
9. Social media and sexual health attitudes of Gen Alpha
How is social media influencing how Gen Alpha understands sex, relationships, and consent?
Impact of idea
Any research will support Naz's essential work in support of Global Majority and LGBTQ+ populations across London. The specific impact of the research will depend on the student's approach. The organisation encourages students to foreground the potential impact for Naz when submitting any proposals.
