Idea for research
Idea for research
Populations in the UK and throughout the world are ageing. This would mean that there would be an significant increase in use of social services, with associated economic impact in the future. Japan has currently the highest number of people in the world who are aged over 65 which constitutes over 28.7% (36.17 million) of their population. They have over 61,000 centurions - people aged over 100. Their older people are mobile, active and self-sufficient with comparatively low rates of dementia and age-related problems. Some have climbed Mt Everest in their late 80s and 100-year-olds have set new international swimming records. Keio University is Japan's oldest university and they have been researching healthy and independent ageing for some years and currently have a free course available online about some of the findings. The course is offered through FutureLearn. We are interested in partnering with them and with volunteers from UCL in researching what keeps people healthy and independent as they age. We have over 2000 members, most of whom are residents of the boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster.
Impact of idea
We are hoping to be able to set up a template for a nationwide research project following in the lines of the Keio University research. Meanwhile we hope to be able to improve the lives and wellbeing of our members who are over 65 and to be able to set up a regime for those who are over 50 to follow to ensure healthy and independent ageing. We hope that this will reduce the care costs in the long term both for the Boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster and ultimately for the UK
