Looking for a fun, competitive sport in an inclusive environment? Whether you’re an experienced player or have never picked up a basketball, the UCL Wheelchair Basketball Club is the place for you! We’re a brand-new society welcoming everyone - whether you have a disability or not. Our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive community while enjoying the sport and raising awareness for disability sport at UCL.
No experience? No problem!
We’ve got you covered with our sports wheelchairs and basketballs, so all you need to bring is yourself, some comfortable clothes and a bottle of water!
What to Expect?
- Weekly Training Sessions: Join un every Tuesday from 8-10 pm at Somers Town Community Sports Centre. All of our sessions are run by a qualified coach alongside experienced players who will guide you every step of the way, starting from a warm-up at the beginning of every session to learning new skills and playing games.
- Inclusive for all: We welcome students of all abilities, whether you’ve played basketball before or not. We’ll teach you everything from the rules of the game and how to use the wheelchair to defending and shooting three pointers, so our sessions are tailored for beginners and experienced players alike to enjoy playing the sport in a fun environment.
- Friendly Games: Throughout the year, we will organise friendly games against other (university) teams. We’re also cooperating with the London Sparrows, a London based wheelchair basketball club, to provide more playing opportunities for all of our members. We are also aiming to enter a team into BUCS next year.
- Varsity: The highlight of the year will be a wheelchair basketball showcase during the Varsity Basketball Games where you’ll be able to show off your skills to a large crowd and participate in the Varsity Series against King’s!
Why Join?
- Friendship: Meet students from all backgrounds and make friends on and off court during training sessions, weekly socials and regular events throughout the year, for example during Disability History Month.
- Community: We’ll be working closely with other clubs and societies at UCL, TeamUCL, Student Reps and the Disabled Students’ Network to make the club as inclusive and welcoming as it can be.
- Opportunities: You will be able to help shape our club’s future by getting involved in the committee, helping out where you can, joining volunteering opportunities or even earning your coaching or officiating qualification.
We can’t wait to see you soon!
