This academic year, we launched our TeamUCL Intramural Netball League with great success, engaging over 100 students through the year, across 8 different teams. The League was supported by four student officials, and we hope to continue to use our intramural provision as a means of inspiring students to take up officiating qualifications.

Whilst we were motivated to increase the number of students playing netball at UCL, we were also aiming to diversify the student body that engages in our netball provision. We worked to attract cultural and faith-based society groups, with the goal of accessing students through a network in which they may already feel a sense of community and belonging. After successful pre-launch events at the end of the 2020/21 academic year, we were thrilled to have entrees from both the Hindu Society and the African-Caribbean Society (ACS) in the weekly TeamUCL Netball League for the 2021/22 season.

Fast-forward 8 months, to Friday 29th April 2022, and Seyta Diop was leading her African-Caribbean Society team to victory in the TeamUCL Netball League final. Having narrowly squeezed past the UCL Postgraduate Netball team in the semi-final, ACS ran out 15 – 10 winners in the final, overcoming a strong side comprising several players from the UCL Netball Club. Here is Seyta discussing her experience of the TeamUCL Netball League this year:

We are grateful for the support from BUCS and PlayWaze through the BUCS Active 4 project, which enabled us to administer our TeamUCL intramural leagues through the PlayWaze platform. Having had such a successful campaign this year, we are excited to see what we can achieve in 2022/23!
