"The UCL African Caribbean Society (ACS) is marking Black History Month 2024 with a series of engaging events that celebrate our heritage and amplify Black voices. This year’s theme, Reclaiming Narratives, invites us to take control of our stories, challenging historical distortions and highlighting our contributions to society. It’s a call to celebrate our cultural achievements and take pride in our resilience.

The theme Reclaiming Narratives is crucial to our efforts this month. It encourages us to shine a light on untold stories and celebrate the everyday heroes who contribute to our community's richness. By bringing these narratives to the forefront, we aim to inspire students to play an active role in shaping the future of Black history even if its on a small scale.

At UCL, the community we’ve built through the ACS Society is diverse, welcoming, and empowering. It’s where I’ve met some of my closest friends and found a sense of belonging. More than just a society, it’s a space where we come together to celebrate our culture and support each other’s growth.

What we've been up to so far...

Our celebrations began with the Meet and Eat 2024, an event that brought students together to connect, share experiences, build community and eat food - see the pics below!

Following this, our 90s Movie Night honoured iconic films that have shaped Black cultural identity. We also collaborated with UCL's VOCE Gospel Choir and Jazz Society to host a night of music and unity, showcasing Black creativity through song and performance.

Lots more events to come...

The upcoming Creative Conference will offer students a platform to express themselves and embody the spirit of Reclaiming Narratives. We're also hosting a Black History Month themed Sports Night on Wednesday 23 October focusing on soca, dancehall and Afrobeats (with pre drinks in Phineas!) Beyond campus, visits to firms like Macquarie and PIMCO will provide opportunities to engage with Black professionals, reinforcing connections between students and industry leaders. Check out all the events on the What's On Calendar."
