Tube Strikes: What You Need to Know and Our Top Tips

You may have heard about the train strikes this May and June. They are likely to affect travelling to and from our UCL campuses so we have put together some top tips and some advice for the upcoming strikes especially with exam season and graduation season upon us but there is no need to worry or stress we just need to be a bit more prepared during strike days.

When are the strikes?

The strikes are planned across May and June they are:

  • Tuesday 19 to Wednesday 20 May
  • Thursday 21 to Friday 22 May
  • Tuesday 16 to Wednesday 17 June
  • Thursday 18 to Friday 19 June

All strikes are planned to be from noon the first day till noon the second day but it’s likely the strikes will still affect your journey thought to the evening the second day.

Our top tips

  • Make sure to check your journey in advance we suggest using TfL journey planner https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/
  • Have an alternative route planned just in case your usual line is unexpectedly affected by the strikes
  • It is best to allow extra time for your travels, especially if you have an exam or your graduation that day we really advice that you aim to campus earlier than you usually would to be on the safe side.
  • If you can do, try to travel outside of peak hours the trains will be less busy.
  • Plan your journey home! People often forget this, but the disruption may continue into the evening even though the strikes technically ended at noon.
  • Do bring water, snacks, wear comfortable shoes, keep your phone charged, and be prepared for longer journeys or extra walking if you can’t get directly to some stations.

Getting to Bloomsbury

If you need to travel to Bloomsbury campus, consider using National Rail services into Euston. The Elizabeth line may also be a useful alternative, with connections to Tottenham Court Road within walking distance of many Bloomsbury buildings or you can use bus routes depending on where you are starting your journey from.

Getting to UCL East

Luckily Stratford remains one of the best-connected transport hubs, with the Elizabeth line, London Overground, National Rail services and buses so there are lots of alternatives to taking the Tube.

Getting to the School of Management

You can still get to the School of Management in Canary Wharf there are a lot of options instead of using the tube. You can use the Elizabeth line,  National Rail services, DLR and bus routes depending on where you are starting your journey from.

But do note that with a lot more people taking the bus than usual, bus routes across central London are going to be a lot busier than usual, so if you do get the bus you need to also leave extra time for your journey during strike days.

Lastly, we know this is not ideal, especially during exam and graduation season and any extra stress is not wanted, but planning ahead will help you get to campus as smoothly as possible without any major issues.
