Industry loves a team player!

Thinking about the next stage after uni? Want a low-risk moment to check how ready you are? Join our design sprint - Lightning Hack - to really test your agile thinking, ability to form working relationships quickly, and make sensible suggestions for solving a problem. This is similar to industry interview tasks e.g. Fast track civil service processes.

By booking a ticket via this page, you are expressing interest to this event. We will ask you to confirm your space closer to the time. If the event becomes oversubscribed, we will email all ticket holders asking them to confirm their space.

How will this help land a job?

During the recruitment process, certain industries use a group activities where candidates are presented with a scenario or a problem related to the specific industry and must work as part of a team to analyse, discuss, and propose a solution. What they are assessing is your collaborative skills, problem-solving abilities, and communication effectiveness. These skills are kinda hard to come by during your degree for the most part. Writing essays or a dissertation - these components of your degree are assessing something totally different. So how can you prep for such a recruitment process? By doing! Come along to the Lightning Hack which will give you great insight into how you might perform, right now. Check out the skills and experience you can expect to flex:

  • Collaboration skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Forming working relationships quickly and under pressure
  • Ability to disagree and influence (communication effectiveness)
  • Prioritising skills, combining decision-making and communication skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Ability to let go of perfectionism!

Identify your development needs

The best thing about this activity is that, with a little reflection, you'll be able to identify where your strengths are and where you have development needs. It's better to find this out now than after an interview for that dream job... when it's too late!  This way, you can take action and get better... ahead of that high-stakes interview!! We've built it in, that reflection moment.

What will I be doing?

We'll work in a large room with Ideation Stations. At each station, there'll be flipcharts, sticky notes, paper, scissors, markers, pens... and a real world problem to solve. These are provided by different community organisations - the solutions matter to them right now! For 90 minutes, you'll get down to business with your team. There'll be a brief moment to catch your breath and make final tweaks to your Dragon's Den pitch. Finally, in front of a mixed panel of key stakeholders, each team will pitch their solution. Everyone can vote on the winner before the prize giving and celebrations after!
