Opportunity description:

About Us -

Sense is a national disability charity that supports people with complex communication needs to be understood, connected and valued. We are here for every person who faces communication barriers in a world that relies on being able to see and hear well to be connected. Our flexible and personalised services empower people to communicate and express themselves – be it through speech or sign, touch or movement, gesture or sound, art or dance. Together, we connect differently and campaign passionately for the right to lead connected and fulfilled lives.

Are you kind, committed and fun? We are looking for people to volunteer as Buddies to young people with additional needs in East London.

A Buddy Volunteer is someone who supports a child or young person with complex needs to develop skills, friendships and local connections. The role entails meeting up with your young buddy and doing fun things out in the community with them! This could be going to museums, gigs, art classes, bowling, laser quest… The possibilities are endless! You will both enjoy doing things together, because we match you based on your common interests and personality types.

Studies show that over half of young people who have additional needs in the UK feel lonely - that’s what we aim to change and by giving a small amount of your time can make a big difference. You do not need to have any previous experience working with young people with disabilities as we will provide you with training and ongoing support, to equip you for your role.

We are particularly short of male volunteers and have a list of young boys waiting for a buddy to go out and do fun things with. If you are a man who wants to give back to the community in a fun way, you could help and befriend one of these young people and really make a difference to their life.

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds.

Location:
We have projects that run in Hackney, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets. Our projects vary in age of the young people and commitment: some projects requiring a few hours a week while others require once every two weeks. So there will be a volunteering role that is flexible and suits you. This is a long term volunteering opportunity.

What measures have you put in place to ensure volunteers’ safety during COVID-19?:
We have provided all volunteers and young people with appropriate sanitising equipment. All volunteers have hand sanitiser, gloves, wipes and masks. We also host online sessions currently if volunteers or young people do not feel ready or are not able to start meeting up face to face yet.
