Salsa Society Outreach
The UCL Salsa Society is one of the university’s largest and most vibrant societies. Our Salsa Outreach Programme offers fun-filled salsa sessions to community groups and charities. Our enthusiastic student volunteers have been trained by a professional instructor on how to teach salsa to different age groups, and aim to spread the joy of dance through salsa classes to the members of our partner…
Description
Join us and learn how to teach salsa! Throughout eight sessions learn how to teach people the basics of salsa, how to listen to the music and find the beat and have a great time! We work with a a range of charities such as AgeUK, Holborn Community Centre, Riverside and Centre404. Getting people moving, providing a space to express themselves, bringing smiles and company to people in the community who may not have easy access to it is what we strive to do!
Duties
Each session we start by introducing ourselves and salsa music and asking the participants to find the beat (clapping on 1,2,3 and 5,6,7), then we lead an accessible warm up with options for different levels of mobility. Then we introduce the basic steps and go through some songs with them. Sometimes we get on to doing partner work as well! We wrap up with a cool down and sometimes a mini performance to show them what salsa is like in pairs!
Training
We have a dance instructor called Hugo Rosales who will deliver eight sessions on how to teach salsa, explain the steps and hear the music. He will also teach us small routines to perform!
The eight training sessions will start after term 1 reading week and 80% attendance is compulsory. If you can't make a session though don't worry, we can work together to catch you up! The volunteering will be on a sign-up basis so it fits around your schedule! We will send out polls to see which sessions people can attend and allocate accordingly. We would need people to go to a least one session every two weeks but you are more than welcome to do more! Each session lasts an hour and they are walking distance from UCL.
