Description

Are you an outgoing person who can talk to anyone?

We are a women-only service located in Kings Cross dedicated to supporting women whose lives are affected by (or are at risk of being affected by) sexual exploitation.

We run a drop in service Monday to Thursday from 12.30pm until 3.30pm.
During the drop in, our service-users have access to a nutritious meal, shower facilities, laundry facilities and a range of fun activities which run daily and differ from day to day. Volunteers work alongside Support Workers and other staff to ensure the smooth-running of the drop in service.

We're particularly looking for someone to manage the reception desk one day a week, which involves greeting and coversing our service users, answering phonecalls and booking appointments. We've had a wonderful volunteering relationship with UCL and continue to welcome applications for this post - please include in your application if you would be open to other volunteering roles with us.

Duties

- Greeting all service users in a professional and friendly manner as they enter the service.
- Maintaining a positive energy for the drop-in environment.
- Answering phone calls and booking appointments
- Signposting service users to other members of staff/satellite agencies/volunteers appropriately
- Promoting services available to each service user on that day.
- Encouraging service users to take part in the activities provided at the centre.
- Report to support staff the outcome and any concerns regarding interactions or observations of service users
- Attending pre and debrief sessions

Who will the volunteers be working with?
This role will see you interacting with service users, staff and other volunteers.

Service users may be battling addiction, mentally ill, homeless, in situations of domestic violence, experiencing immigration issues and more. It is important to understand that the work can be confronting but is also extremely rewarding.
Training
You will be provided with full training prior to starting.

Time commitment

Successful applicants need to be able to commit to at least one regular day of the week (Mon/Tues/Weds or Thurs) for ideally a period of six months (there is no upper limit). On the day (or days) of the week, you would start at 12.15 for a pre-brief session and finish at 3.45 prior to de-brief.

As we are working with vulnerable women, we want to make sure there is some semblance of continuity, normality and predictability in terms of who is around, which is why we ask for a regular day, time and hope for a longer total period of commitment. Also historically, it's proven a more enriching experience for volunteers in terms of relationship-building with the service-users.

This organisation is one of our community partner organisations.

Like all volunteer recruiters we work with, they have signed up to our service standards, agreeing to abide by our policy on partnership working to keep you safe and supported whilst you volunteer.

You’ll never be out of pocket for volunteering through us – with in-London travel expenses to and from your volunteering guaranteed.

In addition, the team here at Students’ Union UCL Volunteering Service is here to support you throughout your volunteering journey – you can get in touch with us at any time.
