Age UK Westminster
Age UK Westminster exists to promote the well-being of older people in the City of Westminster and help make life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience within our local community.

Age UK Westminster runs a group based on the Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) model, where group members who are living with dementia and other cognitive impairments can participate in meaningful and stimulating activities, proven to help maintain memory and mental function. The groups provide a fun, supportive environment where people can build new relationships.

MCST Activities include discussions, word games, quizzes, physical activities and creative and musical activities. The weekly sessions take place from 2.30 pm - 4.00 pm at St Marylebone Parish Church, 17 Marylebone Rd, London NW1 5LT.

We also run a monthly Memory Café which offers a relaxed, informal setting for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers to get together. The Memory Café provides a mixture of talks, information and advice, entertainment and activities. The Café is held from 11 am - 1 pm at Regent Hall, 275 Oxford Street, London W1C 2DJ.

We are recruiting a small group of volunteers who can commit long-term to supporting the weekly group activities sessions.

Although volunteers will not be expected to deliver the sessions, you may be asked to step in to provide support in cases of holiday, sickness or emergency.

Summary of duties:

  • Helping the project leads to set up the venue and session activities on-site before the sessions begin.
  • Welcoming clients to the session; providing a friendly smile as people arrive and chatting with clients and their carers.
  • Encouraging and supporting members to participate in activities.
  • Preparing and distributing refreshments
Who will the volunteers be working with?
Volunteers will be supporting older participants who are affected by dementia or are experiencing difficulties with memory loss caused by other conditions.
Volunteers will received general induction and dementia awareness training before commencing their role.

Time commitment

The Group Dementia Volunteer Support role will suit someone who is available for approximately an hour and a half per week on Tuesdays and able to make long-term commitment to support the Dementia Project. Volunteering will take place on the same day of the week, in the morning or afternoon.
