Nearly 400 runners of all abilities took part in UCL’s first Campus Run, hosted by Students’ Union UCL from our UCL East campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

On Wednesday 24 April, we hosted our first UCL Campus Run in conjunction with our delivery partner Run Through UK.

The UCL Campus Run brought together: UCL undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff, alumni and even some of our four-legged-friends. Runners had the choice of distances as the event offered both a 5km and 10km route. Entrants ranged from experienced runners out to get a personal best to joggers and fun runners enjoying the festive atmosphere. All runners enjoyed the fantastic views from the park including iconic landmarks like London Stadium, ArcerlorMittal Orbit and the London Aquatics Centre.

"I have never run 10km before, so I knew that this would be a great personal challenge for me. The marshals and supporters were amazing, it really helped keep me motivated and made me feel part of the UCL community. It has inspired me to keep running!"

Tushar Uppal (Project Active Assistant)

First over the line for the 5km distance was Richard (Ric) Passey, chief information architect in UCL’s Information Services Division (ISD), who described the run as “windy and fast-paced!”. The 10km distance saw recent UCL alumni Wen Zhe (Zach) Ng coming home first with an impressive performance, clocking in at 33m 35s.

Throughout the UCL Campus Run the feeling of community was present with volunteers, and peers cheering and encouraging each other through each stage of the event. UCL East Students’ Union Manager Balraj Dhingra said:

"There’s such a feel-good atmosphere when our UCL community gets together. We’re really pleased with how the event went and I’d like to thank everyone who took part, supported us, helped to organise or came along to cheer. Our Student Life Strategy is increasing opportunities for participation in sport, culture and the arts and helping students across UCL to develop their passions and skills, as well as stronger sense of belonging to UCL."

We would like to say a big thank you to our Postgraduate Officer Issy Smith for delivering an energetic and motivating warm up, to our volunteers from UCL’s photography society who brilliantly captured the essence of the event, to Run Through UK our delivery partners who helped with the smooth running of the event and to everyone  who supported making this event a great success.!
