RUMS is nothing without its sports clubs (and the MDs, of course). As I write this we have come off a truly fantastic weekend for RUMS Sport. RUMS Rugby 1st XV won the UH Cup for the first time in over a century, undoing years of hurt. Even Mary’s Fairy couldn’t dampen our spirits. This was closely followed by the London Varsity played out between RUMS HC and GKT HC and, whilst RUMS came away with no silverware, the supporters were a credit to the medical school and demonstrated the strength of feeling associated with RUMS - I even managed to spot a couple of football boys - IT WAS INCREDIBLE. I have been fortunate enough to play a role in the success of the clubs and societies of RUMS this year. Now it is your chance to take over the reins. If you’re searching for reasons to run, all you have to do is look back on last weekend, or on every single Sports Night this year, or on the MDs show, or on Bill Smiths. That should give you enough motivation you need to take on this role. Any questions please email me at rums.sport.socs@outlook.com and I’ll be happy to give you some more details on what the role entails whatever stage you are at in your RUMS career.
The role of the events VP is to organise all the main events of the year - freshers fortnight, winter ball, summer ball, finalists ball and anything extra you think should be added into our busy social calendar! It is a really good opportunity to test out your organisational and people skills because you need to do a lot of forward planning and it is key that you can speak to people to get the best deals possible. The main thing is that you need to have enthusiasm because it can be hard work at times to get everyone involved and keen for events.
As RUMS VP Welfare, you’ll be responsible for looking out for all of the other students at RUMS, especially when it comes to issues that affect people during their time at medical school. This year the RUMS VP Welfare has worked closely with the UCLU sabbatical officers, and the RUMS committee, to plan and run numerous events including Mums & Dads, Taboo Week and Taboo events and our new peer-led mentoring scheme. This is a great opportunity for anybody interested in giving something back to RUMS.
The incoming vice-president will need to have great time management, the ability to communicate with external organisations, internal staff and students, and experience in problem solving. The role is vital to the organisation of all Freshers’ events in addition to Half Way Dinner, Winter Ball, Sports Ball, Summer Ball and Finalists’ Ball.
Finance
This role focuses on the management of the RUMS budget so that our events are as enjoyable, extravagant and affordable as possible!
The role consists of maintaining financial relationships with pre-existing sponsors of RUMS, securing new sponsorship contracts and liaising with the union and RUMS committee. You will also need to interpret the RUMS accounts and plan RUMS spending for all events during the academic year. You will be responsible for committee spending and will need to submit expense forms to the union. You will learn how to create expense requests, budget requests and invoice requests.
You will be working closely with the Events VP as their event planning largely depends on the budget you help to devise. By the end of the academic year you will be an expert in negotiating with businesses, which will benefit both you and those attending RUMS events! By keeping your committee members up to date with RUMS finances, you will be able to identify and raise any budget concerns with the President and the Union.
Operations
All committee members work closely together throughout the year - it is important that you support them with their committee tasks, help out with room booking and ensure people are put in touch with the right contacts, where necessary You will need to be available for Freshers’ events to ensure the Fresh are at the right place at the right time, and to check that the events are running as they should be!
As an ambassador for RUMS you will be responsible for promoting the RUMS name - ensuring all medics know what RUMS is and what it can offer them.
RUMS Vice President for Education Years 1-2 and Years 4-5
This role primarily involves liaising between students and faculty concerning the student teaching experience. This includes selecting and leading the student representatives and also chairing Student Staff Consultative Committee Meetings.
