Being a referee or umpire is a fantastic way to get more involved in a sport you love, gain professional skills and earn money. We can support you through your officiating journey, whether you're fully qualified or just starting to think about it.
Why officiate?
- Personal and professional development.
- Gain nationally recognised qualifications and experience that is respected by employers.
- Meet new people and grow your confidence.
- Learn more and give back to a sport you love.

Officiating opportunities
- TeamUCL Social Leagues and Tournaments
We run weekly leagues and one-off tournaments in a number of sports. We have paid officiating roles for netball, football, volleyball and cricket. These matches happen on or close to campus, find out more here.
- BUCS/LUSL Matches
Many TeamUCL clubs play regular fixtures in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) or LUSL (London Univerisities Sports Leagues), meaning there is a big demand for officials.
- Other Local Leagues
There are plenty of opportunities for officials in London outside of university sport. This is a great option for students that are busy representing UCL in BUCS (or other competitions).
If you're interested in any of the above, please email our Community and Workforce Manager, Beth.
Getting qualified
The journey to becoming qualified looks different across sports. Find out more about each sport in the drop-downs below.
We can also support you to become a qualified official. Through our Sports Leadership & Volunteering Fund you could receive a grant to cover up to 100% of the course cost.
