Jiayu (Louise) Liu

Volunteering

As an active volunteer, I accumulated nearly 300 hours of volunteering in my undergraduate degree, mostly in the cultural category, such as volunteering as a Mandarin teacher in Local Chinese Language Schools and helping with the council's Lunar New Year celebration events. Responsibilities included coordinating logistics, maintaining order during events, and ensuring their smooth execution. I have visited about 10 local primary schools to introduce China and help with UCL's Language and Cultural Day Session. I have also done other volunteering work, such as Little Pick and helping with park run activities.

Why did you decide to become a Volunteering Rep?

I have been dedicated to volunteering with great enthusiasm. I aim to involve more students in community service, offering an exceptional volunteering experience at UCL and fostering an enduring culture of service among students by collecting student feedback.

What will be your priorities and what you will you be working on this academic year?

This year, my foremost priority is to highlight and appreciate volunteering achievements, ensuring that students recognize the profound value of their contributions to both the university and society.

Volunteering

I have been volunteering at the United Nations Internet Governance from 2020 to the date where I do support the Secretariat with technical support at various conferences. I also volunteer for Internet Society Global, ISOC Ghana Chapter, EGIGFA, GhanaSIG, West Africa SIG, IS3C under UN IGF.

My role has been supporting inclusive internet governance and internet protection. Within Africa, I have been providing volunteering service to the Pan African Youth Ambassador for Internet Governance as facilitator and Admin support where we have trained more than 1000 youth in Africa in Internet governance with diverse languages in English, Swahili, French, Arabic and Portuguese.

I also volunteered under Oxford Covid-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) in UK which is a project that collected information on policy measures to tackle COVID-19 from 2020 to 2022.

I believe that the world will be better if we work together to make it a better society for all.

Why did you decide to become a Volunteering Rep?

I am very active volunteer in the ecosystem and I always want to create a social impact that will help the world become a better place. I have chosen to become the volunteering representative because, I see more opportunities that students can work on to serve back their community as a leader and being example to such actions I am a person who want to work with others to make our community better by creating memories and change within our academic community whiles helping us to learn new skills for our careers and goals.

What will be your priorities and what you will you be working on this academic year?

My priorities for the year is to look for opportunities that will help the student community to contribute and build career networks. I am also focusing on Internation organizations that will be able to sponsor students to take part in their volunteering activities and support them with travel support to improve their skills and volunteering Impact.

  • Why did you decide to become a Volunteering Rep?

I would like to be the point of contact for all volunteers to enhance their experience volunteering for our community in London. From communicating with the volunteers, I hope that I will be able to relay important feedbacks to improve the volunteering service among volunteers in UCL. I would love to have these aspirations eventually, will impact in increase of volunteers among the students.

What will be your priorities and what you will you be working on this academic year?

I am prioritising to be as accessible as I can among the volunteers should they have any issues regarding volunteering. I also would love to contribute to new and fresh ideas in the volunteering service meeting so improvements can continuously be made during my tenure as a volunteering representative.

    Volunteering

I've actively volunteered with Kith & Kids, focusing on the Weekend Club Autism Support program. Collaborating with fellow volunteers, I supported members with learning disabilities and autism in diverse workshops and outings in London. My role involved ensuring a safe and inclusive environment and aiding members in activities led by professionals. This experience allowed me to contribute to enhancing social skills in their day-to-day lives. Training sessions covered crucial topics, equipping me with valuable skills for effective participation in this community initiative.

The reason for why you decided to become a Volunteering Rep.

I volunteer to represent, driven by a passion for community service. My commitment aims to make a positive impact, fostering connections, promoting well-being, and engaging in initiatives that address societal needs. This role enables me to actively contribute to positive change and create a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Your priorities and what you will be working on this academic year.

The School of Management (SOM) at UCL currently has shown a lack of participation in volunteering opportunities due to its location. As a student representative, I will prioritise communicating ongoing opportunities to increase participation from UCL SOM. Additionally, I'll lead by example, engaging in various opportunities and emphasizing their advantages and how they align with corporate ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles.
