Welcome to our Language Directory

Our Language and Culture Directory connects you with student led language classes run by UCL societies and cultural groups. These sessions are designed to be accessible, peer to peer and fun. From complete beginners to those brushing up on the basics, or anyone simply curious to explore a new culture, there are plenty of classes to get involved in.

The directory will be updated throughout Term 1, so keep an eye out for new sessions, or sign up to our newsletter to stay informed about the latest classes and opportunities. 🌍

FAQ

How do I join a language class?
Browse the Language Directory, choose the class you're interested in, and click through to the event page. The event page will explain whether you need to register in advance or if you can simply attend.
Do I need to be a member of the society to attend language classes?
This depends on the society. Some language classes are open to everyone, while others require society membership. Please check the event page or contact the society directly for more information.
I've never studied the language before. Can I still join?
Yes! Most societies offer beginner-level classes, so no previous experience is needed.
Can I join halfway through the term?
Many societies welcome new students throughout the term, but this depends on the class and level. Check the event page or contact the society before attending.
Can I attend more than one language class?
Absolutely! You're welcome to attend classes from different language societies if you're interested in learning multiple languages.
Who teaches the classes?
Most classes are taught by UCL students, often those with advanced language skills or native speakers, who volunteer to teach and support fellow students.
Looking for formal evening language classes?
If you’re interested in structured, accredited language learning alongside your degree, you can explore classes offered by UCL’s Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE).
CLIE offers a wide range of language courses at different levels, designed to support both beginners and more advanced learners. These classes provide a more formal learning environment, with regular teaching, assessments, and recognised certification.
