Purpose of the job:

To support the Language + Writing Support programme at the Union by assisting non-native English-speaking students with their written and spoken English.

Job description
  • To provide appropriate feedback on samples of students’ written and oral work in one-to-one sessions (advising only on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and general clarity of English used).
  • To communicate with students prior to and after appointments regarding their work and further resources.
  • To deliver workshops and facilitate group discussions for non-native English-speaking students, to support their education and help build communities.
  • To record accurate information about students using the programme, including attendance.
  • To assist in promoting the programme to staff and students across all UCL departments, including via events, articles, social media posts and newsletters.
  • To develop useful guides and resources for UCL students on common grammar, spelling and punctuation queries.
  • To provide general administrative support for the scheme (such as website updates, social media posts and blog entries).
  • To act professionally and observe confidentiality at all times.
  • To work with other members of the Advice & Wellbeing department as needed, for example signposting and referring to other services.
  • To complete such other duties within the general framework of the post as may be required.

Person Specification:

Essential: 

  • Excellent written and spoken English; including spelling, punctuation and pronunciation.
  • Demonstrable experience of English language teaching/tutoring and working with non-native English speakers.
  • Knowledge of the UCL Academic Manual; including UCL guidance on plagiarism and AI misconduct.
  • Working knowledge of a range of referencing systems (for example: Harvard, APA, Chicago).
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills, able to meet deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative to meet individual and team goals
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Enthusiasm and positive attitude to deliver an excellent service for students.
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable: 

  • Formal English language teaching qualification, such as CELTA, TESOL or TEFL.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel and Bookings.

Recruitment Process:

  • Application deadline is Sunday 6th September.at 23.59 hrs
  • Short-listed candidates will be informed by 11th September.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a short task before interview.
  • Interviews are planned to take place 17th September, but this is subject to change.
  • There will be an induction session in the week commencing 28th September.
