UCL Expand Subject Experts (postgraduates only)

Duties and responsibilities

• To design an interactive, engaging and accessible curriculum for a group of ~25 Year 12 UK state school students.
• To design a curriculum topic based on the Subject Expert’s current academic research interests or other area of expert specialism, ideally with an interdisciplinary focus.
• To design subject content which is applicable and engaging to the target audience with consideration of real-world knowledge applications and which exposes the participants to university-level topics and ideas to support their development.
• To deliver the subject content online and in-person in an engaging and accessible manner which encourages high levels of participation.
• To deliver in-person and online sessions with interactivity in mind, and an awareness of how high-level academic content can be made accessible to an unfamiliar audience with problem-solving activities, mixed-media content, discussions, debates, and group work.
• To manage low-level disruption and deploy positive behaviour management strategies within the classroom effectively and refer more serious behaviour or issues to a member of AWPO staff responsibly.
• To act as a positive role model for UCL and higher education, with an adept understanding of the audience targeted at AWPO activities, and to support the confidence and aspirations of young people participating in AWPO activities.
• To actively seek positive and constructive feedback on the subject content throughout the creation stage and be open to adapting content and delivery-style with assistance from AWPO’s Access Team.
• To engage in effective communication with AWPO staff to complete administrative aspects of the role including training, submitting timesheets, setting and meeting content creation deadlines, liaising with AWPO staff, balancing workload, and ensuring attendance to all compulsory session associated with the role.
• To responsibly manage your workload, balancing other commitments with content creation and weekly delivery, and prioritising communicating with AWPO to ensure deadlines are met in a timely manner.
• Undertake all work in line with UCL policies, procedures, and regulations and ensure the promotion of equality of opportunity and non- discrimination in accordance with UCL’s Equal Opportunities policies at all times.
• Undertake all work in line with the UCL AWPO Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and the UCL Data Protection Policy to ensure all young people are kept safe at all times, including completing a UCL-issued Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
• To maintain awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations, and to go about duties in a resource efficient way and minimising impacts to the environment wherever possible.
• Any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.

Special working conditions

• The postholder is required to complete a DBS disclosure at enhanced level (Children’s Barred List) as a condition of employment.
