Faculty Rep Role Description

Student life needs student leaders.

Students understand what it is like to study, live and take part in life at UCL today. As Faculty Rep, you will draw on your experience and listen to others to lead and shape improvements to the student experience inside the classroom.

The Union is here to make more happen, and will provide the training and support you need to get started!

You do not need to be an expert in the Students’ Union or have held a leadership role before. Your experience as a student is your starting point.

This role could suit you if you are willing to:

• Listen to students and take different experiences seriously.
• Notice the ideas, opportunities and challenges affecting your community.
• Share students’ priorities with the people who make decisions.
• Work constructively with other students and staff.
• Follow up and keep students informed.

You are not expected to speak for everyone based only on your own experience. We will help you gather feedback, identify shared priorities and represent a range of student perspectives.

What the role involves

During a typical term, you will:

• Listen to students and other reps within your faculty through conversations, surveys and events.
• Identify shared ideas, experiences and priorities.
• Represent those priorities at Education Zone, Faculty Teaching Committees, and other meeting requested by your faculty team.
• Explain why students’ experiences matter when decisions are being made.
• Work with other Academic Reps within your faculty, the Education Officer, and the SU's Academic Representation team to explore possible improvements.
• Contribute to Education Zone and faculty meetings.
• Report back so students know what was raised, what happened and what comes next.
• Lead and support other Academic Reps within your faculty, and create a chain of communication where they can bring feedback from their courses and departments to you. 

This might involve meeting with important stakeholders within UCL to deliver feedback, supporting on faculty projects or collaborating with departmental societies to create community.

Through this work, you could help create a better academic experience for current and future students at UCL.

The role requires approximately 15-20 hours per term. This includes gathering students’ views, preparing for and attending Education Zone and other meetings requested by your faculty, working with the your faculty's Academic Rep support team, reporting back and taking part in training. Some parts of the year may be busier, particularly around the end of term 1 and beginning of term 2.

Listen, represent, report back

1. Listen to different student experiences.
2. Identify the priorities students share.
3. Represent those priorities where decisions are made.
4. Report back on progress and next steps.

Who can stand?

You can stand for this role if you:

• are a current student within the faculty listed
• have the appropriate study mode listed (e.g. UG, PGT, or PGR)

Please ensure you're nominating yourself for the role with your study mode (i.e. if you're a UG student, you can only nominate yourself for the UG Faculty Rep role for your faculty, and so on).

Training and support

You bring valuable knowledge of what it is like to be a current student. We will help you build the skills needed to listen to others and use that insight effectively.

You will receive:

• An introduction to the role and the Students’ Union.
• Training in gathering feedback and representing different perspectives.
• Guidance on identifying shared priorities.
• Support to prepare for and contribute to meetings.
• Guidance on reporting back and signposting students to support.
• Ongoing support from the SU's Representation Team.
• Opportunities to develop your advocacy, communication and stakeholder management skills.

Mandatory training

If you are elected into the role you will be required to complete a mandatory online Moodle training and a secondary training for Faculty Reps. Dates and times will be shared via the Academic Reps Moodle page. 

In addition, if you are elected into the role you will be required to attend mandatory training:
