Taiwanese Society: President

As a candidate for president of the UCL Taiwanese Society, I have three main policies for the next academic year.

(i) Internal connection:

• Family groups: College-based groups are regarded as better solutions than the random one.
• Alumni networking: UK-based and Taiwan-based alumni will be beneficial to the current students.

(ii)  External collabouration:  

• UCL clubs: There are many opportunities for collaboration with the Asian culture and affairs, or even sports societies, such as the Japan society, Project Active.
• Non-UCL clubs: The different levels of collaborative projects with the non-UCL clubs will benefit from each other, such as SUROCUK, London universities, Oxford and Cambridge universities.
   

(iii) Annual events reform:

• Social events: The two levels of social events will be positive models, such as across the family groups, and across the societies.
• Cultural and career activities: Compared to other UCL Asian culture societies, we could put more effort into these activities.

I’m Angela Huang, a first-year student majoring in MSci Business and Health. I’m running for President of the UCL Taiwanese Society because I hope to build a stronger, more connected community for Taiwanese students while sharing our culture with anyone interested in exploring it. During my year as PR Officer, I’ve had the opportunity to promote our events and help create spaces where people feel welcomed and can find their sense of belonging, even when they are miles away from home. During one of our collaboration events, I got to meet a great variety of students at UCL who are interested to learn more about the unique Taiwanese culture. As a presidential candidate, I aim to strengthen the sense of belonging, create opportunities for meaningful friendships, and organise events that demonstrate the variety and beauty of Taiwanese culture, from night market events to learning traditional tea customs. I want to make sure that every Taiwanese studying at UCL is able to find a place or community where they can always approach when homesickness hits. For me, Taiwanese society is not just a society but a closely knitted commmunity where we can all find a sense of home even in London, at UCL. With my experience, dedication, and passion for community building, I hope to lead our society into a more vibrant, supportive, and memorable year for everyone.
