My name is Ziyu Han, a Year 1 BSc Biological Sciences student progressing into the genetics stream next year. I love genetics because it spans every corner of life sciences and is one of the most socially relevant areas of science today, whether about designer babies or ethics. I want our society to be a place where those conversations feel exciting, welcoming, and open.

As Deputy Head Girl back in high school, I organised large-scale events such as International Day and planned and budgeted Girls Night In for 200 attendees. These experiences strengthened my organisation, budgeting, and leadership skills, which I’m ready to bring to this role.

As Social Events Officer, I would like to introduce/ continue:

Joint London Genetics Socials – Coordinating early with other London genetics societies to host one collaborative social per term, rotating locations for accessibility. Structured icebreakers and small-group games would encourage genuine connections.

Genetics & Ethics Debate Nights – My favourite Gensoc event. I would continue collaboration with BML Soc on topics like cyber-biosecurity and gene editing, ensuring well-moderated discussions.

Genetics-Themed Movie Screenings – One per term (e.g., Gattaca), combining light-hearted viewing with discussion of the science behind the film.

I’m excited to help build my favourite academic society that’s welcoming, dynamic, and genuinely fun to be part of, oh and I’d be honoured to serve as your Social Events Officer :)
