Candidates

Ryan Yan

Hi everyone, I'm Ryan, currently a 1st year BA Linguistics student.

I am nominating myself for the position of conlanging officer for 2 main reasons:

  1. I have been a conlanging hobbyist for somewhere around a decade, and I would love to help create a dedicated space for conlangers.
  2. Having participated in our artificial pidgin event so far, I have really enjoyed it, and I would like to help with the current or any similar future events.

I believe I am suitable for this position, because

  • I have had a long history of conlanging. Amongst all aspects of conlanging, I offer a more artistic insight, such as in neography (script-making) and calligraphy, complementary to what the society currently offers.
  • I have participated in several artificial pidgin and a-priori natural conlanging projects before, and have also established my own on-going project Farbarra, from which I have gained experience managing such projects.
  • Despite not being the most experienced, I am keen to initiate events, and to try and involve more people into our society and events.
  • Above all, I am passionate about conlanging, because it brought me into linguistics, as well as into UCL!

If elected, I plan to host sessions dedicated to neography, with which I hope to attract more newcomers. On top of this I would also help with the currently existing pidgin project.
