Hi, my name is Joey Leong, a year 2 law student, and I am running for the position of the Chair-of-prose in Writer’s Club because I believe I can bring something new and exciting to the Writer’s Club prose sessions.
My goal in this position is to make our bi-weekly prose workshops more engaging and helpful through the introduction of genres, and participate in more collaborative opportunities with other societies so that our members can challenge themselves and help each other become better writers.
My main focus is on expanding upon the diversity and nature of the prose submissions, and to allocate some time to each genre. Instead of relying on prompts, a focus on genre allows our writers to more freely engage in topics that interest them personally. For example, instead of relying on one word prompts, a genre specific theme such as ‘Horror’, “Non-fiction” or “Fantasy” will be a great way for our writers to deeply engage in their preferred genre and be a stepping stone for those trying to write in a different genre for the first time.
In addition, I would also incorporate more writing practice sessions with a focus on feedback on the clarity of writing, descriptive writing and other such techniques to help our members challenge themselves and improve.
Ultimately, I hope to be part of next years’ committee so that I may contribute to a happy and successful year ahead for the Writer’s Club.
I have been a member of this society since my first year, and prose feedback sessions have been my favourite part. Those who came to prose feedback sessions may remember me as the guy who wrote weird (and sometimes funny) sci-fi and fantasy stories. Those who came to the unofficial writing sessions on Sundays may also remember me that way. I can proudly say that I would not be nearly as good a writer as I am without Writers' Society and its feedback sessions. I can only hope to share the same experience with everyone who joins the society next year, but I will try my best to do so.
