UCL Trans Network, UCL LGBT+ Network, and UCL Women's Network strongly object to the upcoming ‘Education For Women’s Liberation’ organised by A Woman’s Place UK (WPUK) which is due to take place on our campus on Saturday 4 February 2023.
We are disappointed to see this conference return again despite UCL’s commitment to supporting trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming students and staff.
We believe WPUK is an organisation hostile to trans people, particularly by advocating for the exclusion of transgender and gender diverse people from certain spaces.
Freedom of Expression is a fundamental right; however, this right does not extend to limiting or undermining the human rights of others. Freedom of Expression is not a valid argument to protect people who discriminate against or harass others, and in the case of WPUK, by reference to someone’s gender.
UCL must be a safe, open and accessible space for trans and gender non-conforming students. Enabling WPUK to hold their conference on our campus goes against what we stand for as an institution and is not welcomed by our Union, our elected officers, or our members, and we have no tolerance for people who contribute to developing a hostile environment for the trans community.
We will be beginning our LGBT+ History Month programme in February, including events in opposition to this conference – so keep an eye out to see how you can join our acknowledgement and celebration of the LGBT+ community.
