Meet Yiran Liu, your new UCL East Students’ Officer. Yiran is committed to helping UCL East grow. From pushing for more community events to making sure student voices are heard, they’re here to support the East campus as it continues to build its own identity.
We sat down with Yiran to talk about their plans for the year ahead, what inspires them, and the ideas they’re bringing to the role…

Welcome to the role! If you had to describe One Pool Street in three words, what would they be?
If I had to describe UCL East in three words, I’d choose creativity, interdisciplinary and innovation. It’s a place where you can live, grow, and create all in one space. The East campus blends architecture, arts, STEM, and sustainability across its faculties, bridging academic divides. From the vibrant community at One Pool Street to the collaborative Energy at Marshgate, UCL East truly brings ideas to life.
What’s one thing about UCL East that you think everyone should know?
Not everyone in UCL East is a postgraduate. There’s a lively mix of students from diverse backgrounds, including many undergraduates who bring energy and fresh perspectives.
You’re representing students across UCL East. What’s the most exciting part of that responsibility for you?
I found a deep satisfaction in creating new things, and the most exciting part is working alongside such as creative, diverse student union, helping shape how our campus grows, supports and inspires everyone.
What’s one area where you think UCL East students could use a little extra support?
UCL East students would benefit from more social activities and events on campus, building a stronger community so we’re not reliant on what’s happening in Bloomsbury.
Who would be your dream dinner guests?
My dream dinner guests would be people who inspire creativity for social change — like Jeremy Bentham, whose radical ideas about equality and utilitarianism helped shape UCL’s mission. Although he wasn’t the founder, Bentham’s belief in education for all inspired the university.
What’s your favourite album, film and novel?
Film: Inception. I’ve been fascinated by Christopher Nolan’s movies for years, but Inception really stands out to me.
Novel: Mrs Dalloway. Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself. That moment sums up so much about her independence and the small, powerful choices we make every day.
What would it surprise people to know about you?
People are often surprised to find out I keep ordering the same food in the same restaurant.
What advice would you give your younger self?
The way to establish oneself is to help others establish themselves; the way to reach one’s goals is to help other reach theirs. A person with an altruistic heart often gains more friendships and support, which are valuable resources on the path to excellence.
What’s the best way for students to connect with you and share their views?
Students can connect with me via email ([email protected]), social media (@lovlyran_1014 on Instagram), or by chatting at campus events. Everyone’s opinion genuinely counts, and there are lots of chances to get involved and have your voice heard in shaping life at UCL East.
