The international debut
One thing that is particularly memorable for me was definitely going to Paris for the International Salsa Congress. We didn't see that coming at all.
We brought 33 people to Paris - we covered the accommodation and festival tickets. We also got to perform at the Congress itself, which is amazing because we are university-level dance society performing on an international stage alongside major artists.
So it was a huge privilege and I'm really glad to see that it actually happened!
Personal growth and development
Being President of Salsa Society has really helped to develop my confidence. It's made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own skin and it's introduced me to so many friends and a huge community. It makes me so happy and I feel very loved.
Community at the core
The number one thing I love about salsa is just the community. The community in UCL Salsa Society is, I'd say, incredibly diverse. It doesn't matter where they're from, or if they have danced before, and even if they believe they cannot dance, I will make them dance on the spot and show you that you can try something new. The community really reflects that attitude, and without that community, you have nothing.
A good dance in salsa is about your partner having a good time. As long as you're enjoying yourself, doing the basic moves, then you've got it!
Commitment to expanding salsa
I am so proud of what the committee has accomplished and overcome together this year. The society really exploded last year and being able to develop so many new initiatives, such as new volunteering programmes, intersociety and interuniversity events, over seas trips.
The upcoming salsathon in term 3 where we're hosting the first inter-uni London salsa competition to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital is just another example of ways we are going above and beyond to collaborate and expand to new areas. We aim to raise £1500!
