Hall Community Officers

Student life needs student leaders.

Students understand what it is like to study, live and take part in life at UCL today. As a Hall Community Officer, you will draw on your experience and listen to others to shape community and create a sense of belonging for students living in UCL Accommodation.

The Union is here to make more happen, and will provide the training and support you need to get started!

Hall Community Officers at a glance:

Who you represent	The students living in the same UCL Accommodation as you.
Commitment	Part-Time, approximately 10-12 hours per term.
Term of office	October to June.
Key meetings	Welfare & Community Zone, Hall Community Officer Forums and termly meetings with Accommodation Managers
Who can stand:	You must be living in the Hall or Accommodation your role is for. EG. A student living in Astor College can apply to be the Hall Community Officer for Astor College.
Training:	Saturday 24 October 2026, 11:00 - 17:00

You do not need to be an expert in the Students’ Union or have held a leadership role before. Your experience as a student is your starting point.

This role could suit you if you are willing to:

Listen to students and take different experiences seriously.
Notice the ideas, opportunities and challenges affecting your Hall.
Share students’ priorities with the people who make decisions.
Work constructively with other students and staff.
Follow up and keep students informed.

You are not expected to speak for everyone based only on your own experience. We will help you gather feedback, identify shared priorities and represent a range of student perspectives.

What the role involves

During a typical term, you will:

Identify shared ideas, experiences and priorities through events and accommodation resident feedback.
Represent those priorities at Welfare & Community Zone meetings, Hall Community Officer Forums and termly meetings with Accommodation Managers.
Work with Student Residence Advisers, Accommodation staff, the Accommodation & Housing Officer, the Welfare & Community Officer and Students’ Union staff to explore possible improvements.
Report back so students know what was raised, what happened and what comes next.
Organise and participate in inclusive halls-based events and activities while making those changes happen.

One way you could make an impact in this role is by working with Student Residence Advisers to plan an event inspired by ideas from students living in your hall.

The role requires approximately 10-12 hours per term.

Listen to different student experiences.
Identify the priorities students share.
Represent those priorities where decisions are made.
Report back on progress and next steps.

Who can stand?

You can stand for this role if you:

Are a current resident of the specific hall or hall grouping for which your role is designated.

Job sharing is not available for this role. If you are concerned about workload, please contact us at [email protected], and we can help you! Once you have moved out of halls, you are no longer eligible to be a Hall Community Officer.

Training and support

You bring valuable knowledge of what it is like to be a current student. We will help you build the skills needed to listen to others and use that insight effectively.

You will receive:

An introduction to the role and the Students’ Union.
Training in gathering feedback and representing different perspectives.
Guidance on identifying shared priorities.
Support to prepare for and contribute to meetings.
Guidance on reporting back and signposting students to support.
Ongoing support from the Students’ Union Democracy team, Welfare & Community Officer and your Hall's Team.
Opportunities to develop your community building, communication and event planning skills.

Mandatory training

If you are elected into the role, you will be required to attend mandatory training:
